About this course
This regulated qualification has been specifically developed to equip learners with the essential skills and knowledge needed to support patients experiencing cardiorespiratory arrest or other life-threatening conditions outside of a hospital setting. It is designed to enhance their ability to recognise and manage deteriorating patients, including during resuscitation, by building on existing competencies in patient assessment, diagnosis, and emergency care. The course also focuses on developing effective teamwork skills crucial for responding to medical or traumatic cardiac arrests in prehospital environments.
Ideal as part of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD), this course is tailored for emergency ambulance personnel, event medics, registered healthcare professionals, and those in specialist roles within the emergency services or military. It is also highly relevant for individuals providing emergency or primary care in community settings, workplaces, or through voluntary organisations.
To maintain the validity of the QA Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (RQF) – or an equivalent qualification – learners are required to complete the Out of Hospital Adult Immediate Life Support (OOHAILS) course annually, alongside maintaining an up-to-date CPD portfolio.
- Be able to safely use and maintain patient monitoring and life support equipment
- Be able to implement methods and procedures to assess and manage an incident
- Be able to assess, devise a working diagnosis, determine severity of a patient’s condition, and manage presenting illness or injuries
- Be able to assess, manage and maintain a patient’s airway and monitor patency
- Be able to carry out immediate life support and post return of spontaneous circulation care
- Understand resuscitation attempt modifications, decision making processes and procedures
- Know how to recognise and manage patients presenting with signs and symptoms indicating major illness
Theory and Practical
Candidates must be 18 years of age.
This qualification is designed for people who have been trained in clinical skills (at/or above level E on the PHEM framework) and factual and theoretical knowledge in broad contexts within a field of work. They have a scope of practice and are guided by standard operating procedures, protocols, or systems of work but can make decisions relating to patient care.
Learners must have successfully completed a Qualsafe Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (RQF) or higher qualification or clinical grade, e.g. registered Nurse, Paramedic or Allied Healthcare Professional working in the out of hospital care/prehospital environment.

After booking
Our courses vary so timings will be confirmed in your joining instructions. All candidates are required to arrive 15 minutes prior to the course start to register and provide their photographic identification.
Directions
From M5 junction 30 take the A376, at the first roundabout take the second exit on to the A3052. Continue for approximately 1 mile and Westpoint enterance is on the left hand side (also signed as Devon Drivers Centre).
When entering through the main gates take the first turning on the right signed Red One Ltd Headquarters. Red One is the first red brick building on the right. Please park in the spaces on the right prior to the building.

I recently completed the Safe Working in Water (SWIW) course with Red One, sponsored by my employer, Lynwood Civil Engineering. As someone who works in environments near or in water as part of civil engineering projects, this training was exactly what I needed to build confidence and ensure compliance with safety standards.
The course was extremely well-structured, with a great balance of theory and hands-on practical sessions. We covered essential topics like personal flotation devices (PFDs), safe working practices in water, self-rescue techniques, and co-worker rescue – all demonstrated clearly and safely.
Instructors Jason and Sam were outstanding. They were knowledgeable, patient, and engaging, making complex concepts easy to understand. They took the time to ensure everyone in the group (including checking kit fit and adjustments) felt comfortable and competent, especially during the practical elements in the outdoor setting. Their real-world experience shone through, and they created a supportive, professional atmosphere that encouraged questions and learning.
The facilities and equipment were top-notch – high-quality NRS and R3 SAR gear, well-maintained and properly fitted. The training felt realistic and thorough without being overly intense, which made it valuable for industrial workers like us.

Have done the safe working in water course course and it's been incredible. I attended a course at Red One Limited a few months ago and was highly impressed with the structure and delivery of the training. Despite being set by City & Guilds, the course was well-organized, engaging, and thoroughly explained. The instructors, all ex-firefighters with extensive hands-on experience, ensured that no question was too trivial and took the time to support every participant.

I attended Red One Confined Space Medium Risk Training at West Point, near Exeter on Monday & Tuesday 29th & 30th May 2024. Sam and Nick were exemplary instructors of the course, who gave detailed tuition from a safety and technical perspective. The practical aspect of the course was very realistic and gave me confidence to enter, exit and control confined space space access safely, whilst giving instruction on how to react in an emergency situation, The course provides proficiency in access, egress and escape routines and instruction in the use of breathing apparatus. I would recommend the course to anyone who needs to enter confined spaces.

I booked my taxi practical test with Red One, I ended up stuck on the A38 in a stand still - I rang the reception & they did everything they could to fit me in that same day, I arrived an hour late, and was greeted by Martin, I was straight away put at ease & managed to pass after my hours lesson before - in which I learnt to undo some
