Aimed at: Personnel working in shallow water environments where there is a need for basic self-rescue and co-worker rescue capability

The Safe Working In Water course provides practical training for personnel who are required to work directly in water (typically shallow or slow-moving), and need the ability to perform self-rescue and assist a colleague in an emergency. It builds on the foundation of the Safe Working Near Water (SWNW) course by introducing in-water hazard management, basic rescue techniques, and personal survival strategies.

This course is ideal for those working in rivers, floodplains, culverts, and other water-prone infrastructure environments where wading is part of the job role.

The practical part of this course is taught at: River Dart Country Park, Holne Park, Ashburton, Devon, TQ13 7NP 

Compliance

Complies with relevant guidance and legislation for working in or around water, including:

• DEFRA and HSE guidance for water operations
• Employer health and safety policies
• Industry standards for in-water risk mitigation and emergency response

Who Should Attend?

This course is designed for personnel who are required to enter and work in shallow water environments as part of their operational duties, including:

• Environment Agency (EA) workers
• Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) staff
• Natural Resources Wales (NRW) personnel
• Construction and civil engineering workers
• Road and bridge maintenance crews
• Flood risk management and watercourse inspection teams
• Utility and infrastructure operatives working near or in water

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Identify water-related hazards and conduct dynamic risk assessments in shallow water environments
2. Select and wear appropriate PPE for in-water operations
3. Demonstrate safe wading techniques in a variety of conditions
4. Perform effective self-rescue techniques in case of accidental submersion or instability
5. Assist in the rescue of a co-worker using low-risk techniques
6. Operate safely and confidently in a team while in water
7. Understand emergency procedures for water-related incidents
8. Apply safe systems of work when required to enter water as part of their role

Instruction:

Training is delivered by highly experienced instructors with extensive industry knowledge. Candidates are encouraged to ask questions throughout the course.
