Steve undertook a wide variety of roles within Devon and latterly Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service (DSFRS) including as a firefighter and in fire safety, training and a range of supervisory, management and senior management roles. He also worked briefly at the National Fire Training College in Moreton-in-Marsh.
Following a short spell as the temporary Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Steve became the Regional Programme Manager for the South West Emergency Services Collaboration Programme, working with colleagues from the Police, Fire, and Ambulance services.
In 2017, Steve retired from his uniformed role to take up the position of Head of Training & Development for DFSRS, working in a job share capacity with Steve West. He left that role and finally retired from the fire service in 2021 and joined Red One, initially as the Chief Operating Officer and then, following a company restructure, he became the Governance & Compliance Officer.
