Firefighter Recruits Course
Red One’s Firefighter Recruits Course is designed to equip delegates with the skills, knowledge, and operational understanding required to join an active fire station. On completion, we’re confident that recruits will be ready to perform the full range of duties expected of a competent firefighter from day one.
Flexibility That Works for You:
Unlike many training providers, Red One takes a highly flexible approach. We tailor our recruits’ programmes to meet your specific service requirements – including local policies, procedures, and risk profiles. We can accommodate courses of up to 24 delegates across a duration of 8 to 12 weeks, depending on your preferred structure and content.
The 80/20 Approach:
During pre-course planning, our instructional team will work closely with you to build a course schedule that meets all your operational outcomes. We follow an 80/20 structure: 80% of the course is built on core, standardised content, while 20% is fully adaptable to suit your service’s specific needs – including local policies, terminology, and demographics.
Experienced, Dedicated Instructors
All training is delivered by serving or former Devon & Somerset FRS instructors, each with operational experience at Watch Manager level or above. They’ve led recruit training at our Plympton Training Centre and are fully committed to your course for its entire duration. Our instructors are available for a minimum of 12 hours per day and remain on-call out of hours to provide support, guidance, and pastoral care – ensuring consistency and a strong learning environment throughout.
Collaborative Reviews & Feedback
We welcome visiting officers and instructors from your service to observe or participate in training delivery – including weekly 1-to-1 reviews, assessments, and scenario exercises. Time is built into the schedule for you to engage directly with recruits and monitor their progress.
Welfare & Wellbeing
While our aim is for every recruit to successfully graduate, we place equal importance on student welfare throughout the programme. A dedicated Welfare Officer is assigned to each course and is available 24/7 to provide support, guidance, and emotional care. We recognise that this course is both physically and mentally demanding, and we are committed to supporting recruits at every stage.
