Breathing Apparatus Instructor

We are the only training provider to run our BAI course over 5 days as opposed to the usual 10. Our course halves the time a firefighter is away from their crucial roles back home. We ensure all learning outcomes and Skills For Justice criteria is met by working slightly longer days and providing some pre-course learning.

Our SFJ accredited course...

has been designed to give a qualified breathing apparatus wearer the necessary skills and awareness to design, organise, lead and instruct a meaningful and safe BA session in an effective manner. We want our students to walk away and feel confident to run their own session, delegates learn practically by running their own exercises, where they receive feedback from course instructors and from the other course attendees; this allows the students to safely and confidently run an exercise of their own.

Our BAI courses...

are always run with 4 instructors and a maximum of 8 students. We are aware other training providers offer larger group sizes, however; we will not sacrifice student safety for increased revenue.

Integral to the course is an assessment philosophy that provides evidence of the candidates’ individual attainment. Instructors continually assess delegates throughout the course with the aim of ensuring all candidates are progressing and developing their practical skills in a safe and effective manner.

Learning outcomes:

  • Operational Guidance – Breathing Apparatus
  • BA training risk assessment
  • How RIDDOR applies to BA training
  • BA set presentation
  • BA Training – from exercise planning to post event review
  • Management of heat related illness and minor burns during training
  • Debriefing and feedback workshop
  • Practicalities of successful BA training, both simulated and live fire

“This is by far and away the best course and time I have had since being in the fire service for 16 years. The instructors are a credit to the Fire and Rescue Service and deserve all the recognition they get”

David Evans: Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service
